A total of 19 Ferrari F40 LM models were built with the help of Michelotto, although Ferrari acknowledges only 18 of them as true, original Ferraris. The Ferrari F40 road car was still in production, so Ferrari searched for an external company, which became Michelotto. Ferrari collaborated with them on many areas before, so it was an easy pick.

A specially prepared engine, which produced between 850-900 horsepower, was developed for the LM.
